Make for interdisciplinarity

The challenges you will be confronted with once you graduate are becoming increasingly complex. Besides requiring a solid background in a core discipline, they demand an ability to work at the intersection between a range of fields.

By participating in one of these challenges, you will acquire solid team-working, project management and communication skills and get a first hands-on experience in a real-world project at the same time.

Launch your idea

Project proposals can be submitted once a year, early June by students (bottom-up) or professors (top-down).

A professional project while studying

Embark on a journey of interdisciplinarity at EPFL! These achievements underscore the collaborative spirit and innovation fostered within EPFL's dynamic environment.

The size of these teams, up to more than 100 students, with projects lasting 20 weeks to a full year, makes communication very challenging.

Being part of a team

By definition, in interdisciplinary projects you're not alone! Teams are generally made up of a minimum of 10 to 15 students from different disciplines, and can go up to more than 100 students (divided into sub-teams) for more ambitious projects.

Starting a long journey

Interdisciplinary projects are usually longer than a single academic semester. Most projects are lasting 20 weeks to a full year. As the projects tend to start a new iteration every year, the students work on documenting the knowledge they acquire. This knowledge is important for the next team if they want to be more ambitious. Some projects are even multi-year projects ( SP80, rebuiLT, EPFL Spacecraft team ).

Every project is different, but here is a typical timeline for this type of project:
